Government Library and Research Services
A project is underway to redefine Government Library and Research Services across the Western Australian public sector. A new model will offer services to all State Government officers working across Western Australia, including in regional areas. The new model for Library and Research Services will:
- Extend and broaden services, making information, resources and services available across the whole WA public sector
- Raise awareness of the importance of library and research services for policy and decision making.
- Digitally transform services and resources
- Foster collaboration and resource sharing
- Reduce duplication and increase purchasing power
The Government Library and Research Service model will be informed by data collected across the public sector on service needs and expectations and will include:
- Access to physical and digital information resources, including books, journals, reports and databases
- Research and reference support
- Information and digital literacy training and assistance

Why do government departments need a library and research service?
Evidence-based policy and decision making is underpinned by reliable and authoritative information. Librarians and information professionals employed in the library service are responsible for facilitating access to this information, and supporting the development of information and digital literacy skills to better navigate information in an online environment.
Currently, only 11 departments have access to a library service. This project will ensure that these services are offered equitably across all State Government departments and agencies.
When will the service be implemented?
Implementation of a new model for Government Library and Research Services will commence 1 July 2019.
Who is involved in the project?
The project is led by a steering group with representatives from State Library of Western Australia and Government departments. The Planning Library and State Heritage Library will be involved as pilot libraries in the early stage of the project to establish the model for library services.
Project groups for various parts of the project will be established as needed, and stakeholders from across the public sector will be invited to participate.
A review of existing government library and research services was conducted in 2018. A report was submitted in August 2018 to the Public Sector Leadership Council, who approved the formation of a working group to steer the implementation of a preferred model by 1 July 2019.
